A concertante version of the Scottish play, resonating the original performances in The Globe.
Still on repertoire and available for touring. Performed in English, supertitles in different languages possible.
Macbeth, written in 1606, is a play about how power can assume crazy proportions. Zuidpool drags it into the here and now, but in the original English-language version, and for a standing audience.
This version of Macbeth reveals an abundance of perspectives and voices, emotions that turn out to be quotations, sounds and furies. Instead of simplifying the complexity of the text, the artistic team chose to actually experience it. The shaping of the language went through the world of sound, voice and music. Macbeth explores a new potential for the use of this classical text in the theatre.
Macbeth offers the public the opportunity to discover its tragedy together with the actors. This collective experience creates a ‘mental space’ where actors and audience are on an equal footing.

Theater Zuidpool transforms Shakespeare’s Macbeth into an underground-like opera. Provocative and modulating with an arsenal of musical genres, and poetry used as a weapon. … Never seen something like this before. … Marvelous guitar solos, lively beats, country, improvisation, … It is music talking, words singing, actors opening up higher realms with their voices. … an excellent selection of scenes from Shakespeare’s play, spoken, sung and whispered in seventeenth century English and accompanied by Mauro Pawlowski’s music.
De Morgen, Anna Luyten
Again a startling Zuidpool-creation. … it does provoke wayward theater. Shakespeare’s prolixity has been cleverly cut down to the solos and duets between Macbeth and his ardent Lady. …Not often in the past was the dim discomfort of Macbeth so precisely touched upon.
De Standaard, Wouter Hillaert
Rough rock, partybeats and country mingle with the impassioned expression of the players. The ensemble is painstaking. They stand as one band and bring Shakespeare’s musical poetry to life. This Macbeth shows how you can move the boundaries of theatre without using far-fetched concepts.
Jorgen Cassier plays Macbeth in an a frighteningly cold way, almost possessed. … Lady Macbeth too, played by Sofie Decleir, is gruesome in her ambition to bring her husband to power. … an impressively cruel performance that combines audio play, hardrock, pop concert and theatre classics, melting them into a great Gesamtkunstwerk.

Zuidpools Macbeth is sinister and threatening. … Especially Sofie Decleir as Lady Macbeth is ominous and terrifying in the high register. Her role is a brilliant move, Kate bush meets Lady Macbeth.
