About Zuidpool & BARRY / Karel Tuytschaever

Zuidpool
is an open, modular house for the performing arts. Zuidpool looks for ways to bring its own distinctive artistic language to bear on new contexts. It combines theatre productions with masterclasses and writers’ residencies, visual art with poetry, interactive performances with debates.

Performer, theatre maker and university lecturer Karel Tuytschaever brings all of his work together under the platform known as BARRY. His hybrid work comprises (dance) performances, installations, plays, publications and films. BARRY raises questions about the ways in which we can look at bodies. He is fascinated by how the body works, and by the gap between reality of that body and the way it is depicted in graphic images.

Zuidpool and Karel worked together for the first time in 2017, on the organisation of the masterclass on ‘Body images. In 2018, Karel became artist in residence, an experience that gave rise to TOM, the portrait of a man in the city, an ode to the art of the gaze. In spring 2019, Karel co-created INTERLUDE, the graduating project of Maarten Heijnens. After the summer, he presents 'STRANGER' as part of his residency in Zuidpool.

About the Masterclass 'The body in the arts'

In autumn 2019, Zuidpool and Karel are holding an intensive 6-day masterclass that is open to every art form and focuses on the body. The event is intended as an encounter across all boundaries within artistic education. A dialogue between theory and practice. Mutual discovery and an in-depth approach are the main objectives.

In the masterclass, you will spend 6 days working with Karel Tuytschaever. His research serves as the starting point of the masterclass. From the perspective of various disciplines, Karel seeks – together with the participants – to consider various aspects of corporeality. The make-up of the participants will determine the theme and define the main lines. The masterclass ends with a public encounter. Together, they will work on a yet to be determined output. A book, an exhibition, dance, photo or silence.

We will start the masterclass by familiarising participants with the work of Karel Tuytschaever. Together, we will watch 'STRANGER' at Zuidpool. On Saturday, we will end the masterclass with a public encounter: a distinctive performance within the framework of Love at First Sight #4.

To whom?

For this masterclass, Karel Tuytschaever is looking for (former) students in various disciplines (cabaret, theatre, text, performance, composition, directing, mime, fashion, architecture, philosophy, film, literature and theatre studies, etc.) who will spend six days working together.

This is not a casting call but an encounter with each other’s world, each other’s imagination. Both Zuidpool and Karel Tuytschaever wish to meet new performers, theatre makers and spectators via an artistic collaboration, and thereby to form new ties with (un)known artists.

Zuidpool and Karel Tuytschaever together will select 10 candidates. We consider it very important to have a mix of artistic disciplines, and a balance among participants with diverse artistic backgrounds. Students in a Master’s or professional Bachelor programme and recent graduates are welcome to apply. The call is open to (former) students from Belgian and Dutch higher education institutions.
