"MACBETH" is a concert interpretation of Shakespeare's original text that was conceived out of Zuidpool's first reading of the play in English. The company's core trio (Jorgen Cassier, Koen van Kaam & Sofie Decleir) was struck by the musicality in Shakespeare's original text when they read it in English. Rather than stage a literal fully-realized theatre production in Dutch, the company chose to stage "MACBETH" in English as a raw, minimal live concert, equipped with an original score by two of Belgium's greatest alternative musicians Mauro Pawlowski & Tijs Delbeke.
"MACBETH" is a music theatre deconstruction of one of Shakespeare's most recognizable works. A dynamic and feverish production that borders between underground opera and rock concert.

"... an electric experience of theatrical performance... Zuidpool is a powerhouse and one can only imagine what they'll do next." Chicago Stage Standard
"This is how Shakespeare's company might've done Macbeth if only they'd had electric guitars." Chicago Reader
"An impressively cruel performance combining audio play, hardrock, pop concert and theatre classics, melting them into a great Gesamtkunstwerk." Theaterkrant (NL)
"Rough rock, partybeats and country mingle with the impassioned expression of the players. The ensemble is precisely attuned. They stand as one band and bring Shakespeare’s musical poetry to life. This "Macbeth" shows how you can move the boundaries of theatre without using far-fetched concepts." Cuttingedge.be (BE)
"Zuidpools Macbeth is sinister and threatening. … Especially Sofie Decleir as Lady Macbeth is ominous and terrifying in the high register. Her role is a brilliant move, Kate bush meets Lady Macbeth." NRC (NL)
"Theater Zuidpool transforms Shakespeare’s Macbeth into an underground-like opera. Provocative and modulating with an arsenal of musical genres, and poetry used as a weapon. … Never seen anything like this before. … Marvelous guitar solos, lively beats, country, improvisation, … It is music talking, words singing, actors opening up higher realms with their voices. … an excellent selection of scenes from Shakespeare’s play, spoken, sung and whispered in seventeenth century English and accompanied by Mauro Pawlowski’s music." De Morgen (BE)
"Again a startling Zuidpool-creation. … it does provoke wayward theater. Shakespeare’s prolixity has been cleverly cut down to the solos and duets between Macbeth and his ardent Lady. …Not often in the past was the dim discomfort of Macbeth so precisely touched upon". De Standaard (BE)
"an organic synthesis of sharp sonorous text that fascinates in its direct rawness… the performers are extraordinary…” operaclick (IT)
